Less mainstream factsSkunks, red pandas, civits, and mongooses/meerkats are not mustelids. Skunks were once included as a subfamily of the family Mustelidae, but in the late 1990s they were given their own classification, Mephitidae. (Research: Dragoo and Honeycutt 1997)
