Less mainstream factsWhen it comes to British literature (particularly of England), whenever an author refers to a species simply as a “weasel”, they are almost exclusively referring to England’s native least weasel (M. nivalis), especially when using the phrase “stoats and weasels”. Likewise, if a species is simply labelled a “badger”, “otter“, “pine marten”, or “polecat”, they are most likely referring to the European badger (M. meles), Eurasian otter (L. lutra), Eurasian pine marten (M. martes), and European polecat (M. putorius).
